Charles Marotta

My grandfather, I never met him as he died before I was born.

I would have really liked to have met him,
from the way my mother talked about him he must have been someone very special.

Salvatore was born about 1888, the date comes from the 1930 census.

Mother says he was from Palermo,
also from the census came the information that he arrived in the US 1899.

Some where along the way from the time he arrived to 1930 he changed his name to Charles.

Although my mother always referred to him as Sam.

Story goes that Salvatore and his future bride Antoinette Veccia (B: May 25 1893 in Caserta to Joseph Veccia and Magadelana Antoinzzer, D: Apr 9 1953 in Detroit Michigan) came over from Italy on the same boat, (both were just children) grew up on the same street and eventually married on Jul 29 1912 in Manhattan NY.

I found this marriage info at Italiangen.org

The 1930 census says Antoinette arrived in the US same year as Charles.

Now back to the boat they supposedly came to America on. I've searched and search Ellis Island for both families but not having any luck. I did find the info below:

Manifest for Chateau Yquem Sailing from Naples

0001. Marotta, Guiseppe M 58y M Italy, Italian Palermo
0002. Enca, Provvidenza F 40y M Italy, Italian Palermo
0003. Marotta, Nenfa F 17y S Italy, Italian Palermo
0004. Marotta, Rosolia F 15y S Italy, Italian Palermo
0005. Marotta, Antonina F 13y S Italy, Italian Palermo
0006. Marotta, Salvatore M 10y S Italy, Italian Palermo
0007. Marotta, Damiano M 8y S Italy, Italian Palermo
0008. Marotta, Cosmo M 5y S Italy, Italian Palermo

ok so with all that said and done on to other things.

Salvatore and Antoinette had 9 children that I can account for, ones I know of personally.
Although 2 of them I never met.

This family went back and forth from New York to Michigan for several years before settling down in Michigan. Salvatore started his own business of building homes in Michigan and mother said he owned a fish barge in New York.
